Digital certificate (certificado digital), Cl@ve and DNIe in Spain
A digital certificate or Cl@ve is required for most Spanish administrative procedures online. There are three options: digital certificate (browser-based), Cl@ve PIN (SMS-based) or Spanish ID card with chip.

- Test it immediately on a government portal after installation.

Deadlines and risk
- Certificate installed but not working: browser compatibility or Java version issue.
- Cl@ve registered but no SMS: check the registered phone number.
- Expired certificate: renew before expiry. May not be renewable after.
- Certificate deleted with browser: reinstall from backup or request a new one.
- In-person vérification needed once: EU citizens may need specific offices.
