Unemployment benefit (paro) contribution days in Spain
Your right to unemployment benefit (paro) in Spain depends on contribution days in the last 6 years. You need at least 360 days (12 months) to qualify. Each extra period adds duration up to a maximum of 720 days (24 months).
Quick answer
- Minimum to qualify: 360 days (12 months) of contributions in the last 6 years.
- Maximum duration: 720 days (24 months) for 2,160-plus days of contributions.
- Check your contribution days in your work history from the social security website.
- Gaps in contributions reduce your entitlement. Only days actually contributed in the last 6 years count.

What to do first
- Download your work history from the social security website. It lists all contribution periods.
- Count only periods in the last 6 years before your unemployment. Earlier periods do not count.
- Check for periods marked as not contributing: sick leave without contributions, undeclared work.
- If there are errors in your work history, request a correction from the social security authority.
Documents and evidence
- DNI/NIE/TIE or passport.
- SEPE/INSS decision, application receipt or expediente number.
- Work history report (vida laboral), contribution days, income documents and bank details.
Deadlines and risk
- Contribution gaps reduce duration. Each missing month moves you one step down in the table.
- Overlapping contracts: if you worked for two employers simultaneously, periods are not doubled.
- Part-time work: contributions are proportional. Part-time months count as less than full months.
- SEPE uses its database, not your estimate. Discrepancies should be corrected before applying.
- Foreign contribution periods may count under EU or bilateral social security agreements.
