KYC requirements in Spain: what banks can ask for
Banks in Spain can request identity and source-of-funds documents, but the request must be specific and in writing. If the bank restricts access without explanation, a written complaint to customer services is the correct first step.
Quick answer
- A bank can request: proof of income, source of large credits, account purpose, tax details.
- Response deadline: usually 15-30 days from the bank written request.
- Documents provided but bank stays silent: file a complaint with customer services.
- Customer services must reply within one month; payment-service complaints have a 15 working-day deadline. If not: escalate to Banco de España.

Respond to KYCWhat the bank can ask for and how to respond correctly
- Proof of income: payslips, tax return, employment contract.
- Origin of large credits: sale contract, inheritance, loan with supporting documents.
- Account purpose: brief written explanation with documents.
- Current personal details: address, phone, tax identification number.
- How to send: email with read receipt, via online banking with confirmation, or recorded letter.
What to do first
- Ask the bank for a written request. A verbal branch request is not a formal basis.
- Reply in writing and keep proof of sending: date, what you sent, to whom.
- Set a response expectation: written confirmation of receipt within 5 working days.
- If the bank does not react: file a complaint with dates, names and copies of what you sent.
Documents and evidence
- Bank messages, screenshots and access errors.
- KYC requests, documents sent and delivery proof.
- Account contract, statements and proof of origin of funds.
Deadlines and risk
- Everything verbal: no evidence that you responded. The bank can restrict access citing your silence.
- Documents sent without proof of sending: if the bank says nothing was received, nothing to show.
- Complaint without specifying when the problem started: harder to track the response deadline.
- Incomplete reply: the bank can request again and extend the review.
- KYC request ignored: the bank may restrict operations or close the account.
